GoldBod puts $1.5 billion into October's dollar market — and says the cedi is already responding

Ghana's Gold Board says it will supply $1.5 billion of foreign exchange in October 2026 — $1 billion to commercial banks and $500 million to the Bank of Ghana — after a $130 million spot sale at GH¢11.60 to the dollar. The Board says the cedi has appreciated for three straight weeks on the interbank market.

Key points

  • GoldBod's October programme: $1 billion to authorised commercial banks, $500 million to the Bank of Ghana for reserves.
  • The Board says it already sold $130 million spot at GH¢11.60 to the dollar.
  • GoldBod says the cedi has appreciated for more than three consecutive weeks on the interbank market.
  • The dollars come from Ghana's small-scale gold trade, which GoldBod has bought as sole authorised buyer since April 2025.

What happened

GoldBod was created by the Ghana Gold Board Act in April 2025 as the sole authorised buyer and exporter of small-scale gold — the reform under which official small-scale exports rose from about 63 tonnes in 2024 to about 104 tonnes in 2025 (see our GoldBod story). The foreign exchange those exports earn is now being used deliberately as a currency tool.

The Bank of Ghana's governor, Dr Johnson Asiama, has meanwhile cautioned that the central bank sometimes allows the cedi to weaken slightly as part of managing the economy — a reminder that the authorities are aiming for stability, not a one-way appreciation they cannot sustain.

GoldBod announced on 22 October 2026 that its October programme will supply $1 billion to authorised commercial banks and $500 million to the Bank of Ghana for reserve accumulation.

Why this label: The Board's own announcement, reported by Adom FM and Ghanaian outlets. The verified fact is the announced programme; delivery through the month is a separate question, tracked in the unknowns.

Not yet verified
The interventions are the reason the cedi has appreciated for three consecutive weeks.

Why this label: That is GoldBod's own account of its impact. The appreciation is consistent with an interbank rate around GH¢11.60, but attributing the move to one seller's supply — rather than broader dollar inflows and central-bank policy — is the Board's interpretation, not an independently established cause.

On the ladder: the evidence so far sits low — early, single or social sources. We publish the claim as a claim, never as fact.

The Bank of Ghana's governor has said the central bank at times deliberately allows the cedi to weaken slightly as part of economic management.

Why this label: Governor Johnson Asiama's remarks, reported alongside the GoldBod announcement — a useful check on any claim that the authorities want the cedi to rise without limit.

What we know / what we don't know yet

What we know

  • The programme's size and split ($1bn banks / $500m BoG) are from GoldBod's own announcement.
  • A $130 million spot sale at GH¢11.60/$ was disclosed by the Board.

What we don't know yet

  • How much of the $1.5 billion had actually been delivered by late October — the announcement is a programme for the month, not a completion report.
  • Whether the cedi holds its level once the October supply ends.

Why it matters

The cedi's level sets the price of fuel, imports and school fees paid abroad. Ghana is testing a new model — using a state gold monopoly's export earnings as a standing currency intervention — and October is its biggest single month yet. If it works, it becomes a template; if the rate snaps back in November, it was a very expensive pause.
